This was a great Kickoff to the Dirty South leg. Show started much earlier than usual, but the night was beautiful, just a little muggy.
First set standouts for me were Lawn Boy, gumbo, and Wedge. While my guitar gently weeps closed it out, and it was stunning. Trey was channeling talent tonight.
Our crew had assigned seats all over the venue, so we opted to all go to the very top walkway of the arena — with plenty of room to dance. Kuroda was fabulous — he was painting with a ton of pastel lights tonight, and lots of orange, and I really enjoyed it. I love all the different experiences different seats give me at Phish shows — from the top row you totally get the artistry and painting of CK5.
We did have one dude who kept pissing over the back fence, which would have been bad enough just once out of desperation, but he did it at least a dozen times just to be a (tiny) dick.
Second set might have been in my top five. This was my first Lizards and it was amazing. Sand and Waste were stellar. The closer Slave was a real treat.
The boys came out for their encore and genuinely were thrilled at the great crowd, said they clearly needed to return more often. They finished off the very rock-n-roll show with Led Zeppelins Good Times Bad Times. Terrific night!
We capped off the show gathering at the vote booth to give a virtual hollah to our buddy Shane.
After the show, we were all hungry and tried to go to Waffle House but it was far too full for our group of nine.
Instead we headed to Whataburger. Two folks got their food in a relatively reasonable but slow time. Then after a 30minute wait, three more got their food, and the remaining four asked about what happened to theirs.
Ends up the ignorant crew didn’t know whose food it was (here’s a clue — the people waiting in the dining area), so they threw it out. They slowly started remaking it. We had to prod them several times. It finally came out and it was missing the gravy on one order. I went up and asked about it and said this was ridiculous.
Next thing we know, the manager comes out screaming at us that they didn’t have gravy, it would take more than 20 minutes to make, and that we could kiss his ass. And then he repeated that we could kiss his ass multiple times. A heated discussion ensued and he continued to be a total ass.
After he stomped off, the young counter worker came over, apologized to us, and gave us our money back. We called Whataburger corporate and told them they needed to give her his job.
Wow. We have already had some Phish insanity and wonderment and I’ve completely forgotten to update things. Rather than retrace, let’s just say the boys are killing it this run. Dawn caught them in AC, and we went to Noblesville via Amtrak to see Deer Creek. Fantastic shows.
On a long drive to Lubbock yesterday, we were so entertained by the amazing YEM from 6/23 burgettstown that we took a wrong turn and went an hour out of the way.
We are spending an enormous amount of money on Phish this summer, so it’s thrilling that they have stepped it up several notches so far.
Makes the idea of trying to afford new years eve MSG (per rumors) even more important.
Couch tour for the first two shows of the tour… I’m going to wait until I have heard soundboards of the two nights to pass judgment. Sound quality on the live streams was HIDEOUS. I heard a number of incredibly inspired jams, very spacy ethereal stuff that really excited me, but then some moments of near train wreck as they tried to come back together out of those jams.
